Schistocytes: These are also known as Fragmented Red Cells or ‘split’ red cells and are caused due to hemolysis of fragments. Having the capacity to take up different shapes, these can have irregular, triangular, spiculated or helmet shaped red blood cells.

Compared to normal red blood cells, they are smaller and have lesser life span (<120 days).

Clinical significance: These cells are seen in Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia, DIC and Cardiac Hemolytic Anemia.

We express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Amina Maqbool for her support and participation in this.
