Thrombocytopenia is defined as a platelet count of less than 150 × 109/l. The various comorbidities in the severely ill patient affect platelet homeostasis, and consequently, thrombocytopenia is very common in critically ill patients treated in the ICU. Furthermore,
thrombocytopenia in critically ill patients is associated with an increased duration of hospital stay and increased mortality. This study aimed at evaluating the incidence, risk factors, and the outcome of thrombocytopenia in patients admitted to the respiratory intensive care unit (RICU).
